mtlD which catalyses epimerization of D-Fluctose-6-phosphate

mtlD coding region from E.coli. The product catalyses the epimerization of D-Fluctose-6-phosphate to D-mannitol-1-phosphate. When expressed in Saccharomyces　cerevisiae, this enzyme enables the organism to produce mannitol, a sugar alcohol characterized by its sweetness and its low efficiency of metabolization in the human body. Mannitol is also used to raise the osmotic pressure within cells under high osmotic stress.
